The drawstring is what makes this backpack different
Most leather backpacks open with a zip or a buckle flap. This one uses a drawstring at the top of the main compartment, pulled closed and then secured under a leather flap with buckle straps. It sounds like a small detail but it changes the whole character of the bag. It opens wide — wider than a zip ever does — so you can actually see and reach everything inside without digging. And when it's closed and strapped down it holds everything securely without the worry of a broken zip.
The tan cowhide and the drawstring design together give this bag a very specific look — somewhere between a vintage rucksack and a modern leather backpack. It doesn't look like anything you'd find in a high street store, which is exactly the point.
What it actually fits
At 16 x 13 x 6 inches this is a genuinely roomy bag. The dedicated padded laptop sleeve holds up to a 15 inch laptop — not squeezed in, actually held properly with space beside it for folders or documents. The main compartment around it takes everything else — a change of clothes, a book, a camera, whatever your day requires.
The canvas lining inside is a thoughtful detail that most buyers don't notice until they've had the bag a while. Bare leather interiors scuff everything that goes in them. Canvas protects your laptop, your notebooks, your sunglasses — anything that would otherwise rub against raw leather every time you open the bag.
Tan leather and what happens to it over time
Tan is the most honest colour for leather. It doesn't hide the material — it shows it off. The natural grain of the cowhide is fully visible, and because this leather is not heavily surface coated, it responds to use. The areas you handle most — the straps, the buckles, the top of the flap — will darken and develop contrast over time. The body of the bag will stay lighter. After a year it looks like something that was made specifically for you, because in a way it was.
No two pieces of cowhide are identical. The bag you receive will look like the photos — same shape, same construction, same colour range — but the grain pattern and any natural marks in the leather will be unique to yours.
If you are buying this as a gift
This is one of those leather backpacks that works as a gift precisely because it doesn't look like a gift. It looks like something someone spent time choosing — because the design is unusual, the leather is real, and it's clearly not mass produced. The unisex shape and tan colour work for men and women equally. If you want to see what the finished product looks like before it ships, we can send you a video once your order is in production — just ask.
Keeping it in good shape
- Wipe down with a dry cloth after use in rain or dust.
- Condition once or twice a year with a leather conditioner to keep the cowhide supple.
- Store upright with something inside to hold the shape when not in use.
- The buckle straps and drawstring hardware are brass — wipe with a dry cloth if they dull over time.
